Taiji Zhenren's Alchemical Formulas

This book elaborates on the art of transmuting substances into gold and cinnabar, and records twenty-four elixir and pill formulas. Each formula lists the dosage of medicinal ingredients and the corresponding refining methods. It also contains the "Method for Preparing Liuyi Clay", which is made from oyster shells, red kaolin, white kaolin, ant excrement, salt and vinegar—this preparation method differs from that recorded in other texts. Attached to the book are the names of medicinal producing areas such as Jinzhou and Guangzhou, as well as the names and diagrams of alchemy cauldrons and cabinets including the White Tiger Cabinet, the Water-Fire Cauldron and the Pure Yang Cauldron. The content of this book is an important component of Taoism alchemy culture, and the selection and compatibility of its medicinal and mineral ingredients are in line with the theoretical system of the five elements in traditional Chinese philosophy.
