The Anqiu Wangzhi 安丘望之
Paul PengShare
Anqiu Wangzhi, styled Zhongdu, was a native of Changling in Jingzhao (north of present-day Changping District, Beijing) during the reign of Emperor Cheng of the Western Han Dynasty. Both Daoxue Zhuan (Biographies of Daoist Scholars) and Sandong Zhunang (Pearl Pouch of the Three Grottoes) mention that he had long been versed in Daoist learning and enjoyed great fame for a time.

Later, he fell seriously ill, and his disciples carried him to the plum tree in the courtyard. It was the middle of winter, yet an unusual fragrance of plum blossoms wafted in the air, and two red plums were seen hanging on the tree. Anqiu reached up to pick the plums, and after eating them, his illness was completely cured. He felt light in body and clear in vision, claiming that it was Laozi who had descended to heal him.
