Ao Dun Xidao, a member of the Sushen ethnic group, was from Mizhou (now part of Shandong Province) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties. He was also known by his Taoist title "Kaizhenzi" (Master of Opening Truth).

Ao Dun Xidao once held the official positions of "Huaiyuan Da Jiangjun" (Grand General of Guarding Distant Frontiers) and "Ninghai Du Xunshi" (Chief Patrol Officer of Ninghai). In the fourth year of Taihe (1204 AD), due to the outbreak of wars, he and his entire family adopted Taoist attire (to show their devotion to Taoism).
Qiu Changchun (a renowned Taoist master of the Quanzhen School) admired Ao Dun Xidao for his extraordinary perseverance in upholding moral integrity and his resolute conduct. After Ao Dun Xidao formally embraced Taoism, Qiu renamed him "Xidao" (as his Taoist given name). Later, Yu Wangyang (another prominent Quanzhen Taoist master) bestowed upon him the Taoist title "Kaizhenzi".

Hao Taigu (a key figure of the Quanzhen School) taught Ao Dun Xidao the essential doctrines and practices of Quanzhen Taoism. Following this, Ao Dun Xidao's reputation and influence in the Taoist community grew day by day.
