Ba Deshen was a native of Tangyi County during the Jin-Yuan periods. His courtesy name was Zhongzhi, and his literary name (hao) was Qingxu.

After the Zhenyou era (of the Jin Dynasty), he moved south to Xiangling.

Following the death of both his parents, he left home to wander as a traveler. When he reached Mount Meng, he became a disciple of Wei Jun, who was known by the Taoist name Wuchenzi, to study Taoism and practice the legacy of the Dan Yang tradition (a branch of Quanzhen Taoism, founded by Ma Yu, styled Dan Yangzi).

In his later years, he resided at the Taixu Palace in Qingshe. Later, he joined forces with his fellow Taoist Wang Gaoshi (a title meaning "Virtuous Scholar," often used to honor accomplished Taoists) to build a Taoist temple. Li Zhenchang, who held the position of leading the Taoist community at the time, bestowed upon the temple the name "Tongxuan Guan" (Tongxuan Taoist Temple).

Shortly after, Ba Deshen was granted a purple robe trimmed with gold (a symbol of high status in ancient Chinese religion and officialdom) and conferred the title "Qingxu Zhenren" (Real Person Qingxu—"Zhenren" is a revered title for accomplished Taoists in Chinese Taoism).

In the 12th year of the Zhiyuan era (1275, of the Yuan Dynasty), he was summoned to the imperial capital and stayed at the Changchun Palace (a major Quanzhen Taoist temple). The imperial court frequently consulted him on various matters.

By a special imperial decree, he was appointed to the position of "Tiju Zhulu Daojiao" (Director-General of Taoism in All Regions), overseeing Taoist affairs across the empire.
