The Bao Laijin 鲍来金

Bao Laijin was a native of Yuhang during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty.

In the 50th year of the Qianlong reign (1785), he converted to Taoism and became a disciple of Master Chen Qiaoyun, who served as the principal preacher at Sanyuan Palace on the East Embankment of South Lake.

Bao Laijin was born into an aristocratic family. He relied on his talent, looked down on everyone else, and was arrogant and unruly.

After he began to study Taoist doctrines and received teachings from Master Chen Qiaoyun, he suddenly realized and said: "The highest virtue is like water—that is why the sea can be what it is (encompassing all rivers). If one holds oneself in such high esteem that they see others as inferior (like a mountain towering over others), and their mind is filled with more and more disputes over right and wrong, when will this heart ever find peace? Using such a state of mind to practice Taoist methods is no different from heading north while walking south."

From then on, he became modest, gentle, and harmonious, and his cultivation in Taoism made remarkable progress.
