Benwen Category
The first category of the Twelve Categories in the classification system of Taoist scriptures.
Taoist Doctrine Essentials·Meaning of the Twelve Parts interprets "Ben" (root) as origin and foundation, referring to the origin of Taoist scriptures and teachings as well as the root of written characters.

Thus, it states: "Benwen refers to the books of Three Yuans and Eight Hui, and the original form of long-form scriptures." It denotes the "true texts" and original versions of classics.
Major scriptures of the Three Caves are all classified under this category.
