Cai Yangshan was a native of Shimen, Zhejiang Province during the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods of the Qing Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Tianyi. The Lamp of the Heart at Jinge Mountain records that he converted to Taoism in his middle age and studied under Luo Shengzhe.

He resided at Helin Taoist Abbey in Jingu Cave, where he renovated temples and constructed buildings such as Lanyunwu (Lazy Cloud Hollow) and Baoben Hall, revitalizing the religious atmosphere of the mountain.

His knowledge of Taoist scriptures and rituals was profound; he conducted affairs thoroughly and thoughtfully, and appointed people to positions appropriately. For this reason, local people were willing to make donations, and both Taoist practitioners and ordinary folks were drawn to the abbey—followers came in great numbers like clouds gathering.

The fact that Helin Taoist Abbey remained prosperous for more than thirty years was truly due to Cai Yangshan’s contributions.

He was the 12th-Generation Successor Master of the Longmen (Dragon Gate) Sect and the Patriarch of Helin Hall.
