It is inscribed as"Annotated and eulogized by the Mysterious Primordial Perfect Man of Kongtong Mountain", with no recorded time or personal details of the author.
In three volumes, it is included in the Jade Instructions Category ofThe Dongshen SectionwithinThe Daozang.

The two prefaces in the foreword, attributed to Li Bai and Su Shi, were both produced by spirit-writing through mediumship. The annotations take the cultivation of mind and nature as the fundamental principle of ritual repentance; seven-character regulated eulogistic poems are appended at the end, which integrate and elucidate the essential purport of the scripture and its annotations.
