The Supreme Northern Dipper Scripture in Twenty-Eight Chapters
The author is unknown, and the scripture was seemingly compiled in the Song and Yuan dynasties.
In one volume, it is included in The Daozang, classified under the Original Text Category of The Dongshen Section.
This scripture purports to be transmitted by the Primordial Sovereign of the Northern Dipper of the Great Dao to Emperor Ming of the Han Dynasty, and is structured into twenty-eight chapters in total.
The first seven chapters are known as the Seven Primordial Chapters of the Northern Dipper, exhorting Emperor Ming to uphold the true Dao, abandon the obsessions of wealth, sensual desires, greed and anger. It instructs that one should govern the state and cultivate oneself with wisdom and faith as the root, and ritual righteousness as the priority, abstain from harming living beings, and renounce the craving for mortal pleasures.
Chapters Eight to Twenty-Four are titled the Unified Chapters of the Northern Primordial, which impart calamity-dispelling divine incantations, ritual protocols for presenting memorials to the deities, true talismans for delivering from tribulations, as well as the methods of fasting and paying homage to the Primordial Origin. The last four chapters are called the Behest of the Northern Dipper, urging people to firmly believe in the karmic retribution for good and evil deeds and the divine power of celestial spirits, and to widely propagate the scriptures of the Northern Dipper. The scripture states: "All mortal beings shall reap the reward of blessed fruits for the good deeds they intend in their hearts, and incur the karmic bondage of misfortune for the evil deeds they harbor in their minds. The words of the Great Dao are sincere and truthful, and never vain."
