The scripture fictitiously depicts the Most Merciful, Serene, Compassionate and Wonderful Heavenly Lord expounding the Dao to all immortals. It records the titles, divine powers of the "Five Sages" and the merits of believing in this scripture. The so-called "Five Sages" refer to the Great Sage Spirit Officials and the Five Great Marshals of the Emperors, also known as the Five Manifested Spirit Vision Great Emperors. They are the righteous deities of the world, "endowed with the power to bestow blessings and dispel disasters, and the merit to reward the virtuous and punish the wicked". The text lists the honorary titles, true-form talismans (magic scripts), incantations and prayers of the Five Sages.
It states that pious men and women who recite their honorary titles and incantations can dispel disasters and obtain blessings. If encountering calamities, one may invite Orthodox Unity Taoist priests to erect an altar and offer sacrifices to the Five Great Marshals of the Emperors. Then, the Blessing and Virtue Immortal Officials, the Auspicious Youth and other celestial beings will descend to protect and guard them, dispel disasters and bestow blessings.
