Chang Xuzhong lived during the reign of Emperor Huizong of the Northern Song Dynasty.
He possessed Daoist magical arts and behaved in an eccentric manner, often moving between magnificent Daoist temples (referred to as "Lin Palace" and "Jade View" in classical terms, denoting grand Daoist shrines).

He was skilled at expelling evil spirits and curing illnesses, and his methods proved quite effective.
