The Chen Hongfan 陈洪范

Chen Hongfan was a figure of the Song Dynasty, styled Tianxi and known by the literary name Zaozhai. He left secular life and resided in the Jinglian Hall of Chongyou Temple on Mount Wuyi.

Throughout his life, he took delight in the four arts of guqin (a seven-stringed zither), chess, calligraphy, and painting, and practiced the Daoist method of Neidan (Internal Alchemy).

He favored tranquility and planted many orange trees outside his hall. This was inspired by the implications of lines such as "The cultivation of the Returning Elixir is arduous, yet I cannot bear to part with the sweet oranges" and "Several times I mistakenly swallowed an orange, lifting the mundane to the heavenly realm"—using the analogy that the color of the Golden Elixir resembles that of a reddish orange. Hence, he named his residence "Juyin Hall" (Hall of Orange Seclusion).
