The Chen Jinggu 陈靖姑

The Chen Jinggu 陈靖姑

Paul Peng
Chen Jinggu (904-928) was a native of Xiadu in Fuzhou during the Five Dynasties period. She was the female cousin of Chen Shouyuan.
At the age of thirteen, she went to Mount Chang (or Ge Mountain, a sacred mountain associated with Taoist practices) to learn the "Orthodox Method of Mount Chang". She became proficient in Taoist magical arts and helped the local people expel evil spirits and monsters (such as snake-shaped demons). Wang Yanjun, the King of Min, conferred on her the title "Madam Linshui".

Later, she assisted the King of Min in suppressing rebellions, and was further granted the additional title "Madam Linshui of Chongfu". In the third year of the Tiancheng era of the Min Kingdom (928), she passed away. Posthumously, she was bestowed with the titles "Holy Mother of Shuntian, Yuanjun of Shunyi" and "Heavenly Lord of Huichen and Ciliang".

Subsequently, she, together with Lin Jiuniang and Li Sanniang, became collectively known as the "Three Nai Madams of Mount Chang" (or "Three Ladies of Mount Chang").

The belief in the Three Nai Madams was prevalent along the coastal areas of Fujian. During the Song Dynasty, this belief spread to Taiwan. It belongs to the "Three Nai School of Mount Chang" under the Jingming Sect of Xishan (a branch of Taoism).
