The Chen Laiwo 陈来斡

Paul Peng
Chen Laiwo (1829–1896) was a native of Chentai, Wuxing (now part of Jiangsu Province) during the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Muzhai, and his art name was Xiya.

In his youth, he admired Taoism and enjoyed studying metaphysics.

As recorded in Jueyun Daotong Xinchuan (The Torch of the Taoist Tradition Passed Down by Jueyun), upon hearing that Boyunzi of Jinge Mountain was renowned for his brilliant writings and noble morality in his time, Laiwo entered the mountain to apprentice under him and study Taoism.

He served his master for many years and learned the esoteric secrets that were not passed down to outsiders from Grand Masters Shen and Min. From then on, he mastered the essential principles of Taoism, and his practices were quite effective.

He was fond of relieving the poor and practicing charity, establishing the Shecun Nursery and burying unclaimed bodies on the roads, among other deeds. He was humble and gentle in character, and upright in conduct.

He passed away in the 22nd year of the Guangxu reign (1896) at the age of 68.

Paul Peng is a Zhengyi Taoist priest from Longhu Mountain, Jiangxi — the ancestral home of the Celestial Masters' tradition. Ordained at 25 after a dream from the Celestial Master, he has practiced for 25 years under Master Zeng Guangliang. He is one of the curators of this store, which is officially authorized by Tianshi Fu. All items are consecrated at the temple by the resident priest team.
