Chen Qiongyu was a native of Jinhua, Wuzhou (present-day Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province) during the Northern Song Dynasty.
She claimed to have encountered the Star Goddess of Wuzhou, who enlightened her. Endowed with special abilities, she could abstain from food, predict good and bad fortunes of people, and escape by walking on water without being traced.

Nobles and senior officials flocked to her to be her disciples or associates. In the 7th year of the Zhenghe era (1117), she was summoned to the imperial capital and bestowed the title "Master Miaojing of Cultivation" (literally meaning "Master of Wonderful Quietude in Spiritual Cultivation").
