The Chen Tongwei 陈通微

Paul Peng

Chen Tongwei (? - 1387)

Chen Tongwei was a native of Dongchang in Shandong Province during the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. His original given name was Zhizhong, and his Taoist title was Chongyizi (Master of Calm and Uninhibitedness).

Orphaned at an early age (both parents deceased), he associated with Taoist practitioners and learned the exorcism and prayer rituals of the Zhengyi School (Orthodox Unity School). Later, he traveled to Mount Hua, where he met Zhang Dechun. He received Taoist precepts from Zhang, formally became his disciple, and entered the Taoist order.

It was Zhang Dechun who renamed him "Tongwei" (the name he is now known by). From that point on, Chen Tongwei dedicated himself to the profound practices of Taoism with unwavering resolve: he adhered strictly to virtuous conduct, expounded on the fundamental principles of Taoism, and took delight in initiating and guiding disciples into the faith.

Subsequently, he went to Mount Qingcheng to pursue Taoist cultivation. He passed away in the first month of the 20th year of the Hongwu era (1387) of the Ming Dynasty. He is recognized as the third-generation "Disciplinary Master" (Lüshi) of the Longmen Sect (Dragon Gate Sect) of Taoism.
