Chen Xianhou (1592–?)

Chen Xianhou was a native of Tangyin County, Henan Province, during the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1573–1620). His courtesy name was Xingzhen, and his literary name was Zhanyangzi. He studied Confucian classics from a young age. After reading Essential Sayings from the "Awakening to Truth" (Wuzhenpian Cuiyu) and Shao Yong’s Huangji Jingshi (The Cosmic Principles Governing the World), he suddenly gained profound enlightenment, as if the "thatched barrier" in his mind had been lifted.
Later, he met Zhou Miaochao, to whom he pledged allegiance and converted to Taoism. He then devoted himself to quiet meditation, delving into the Taoist practice of "the cultivation of water and fire" (a core concept in Taoist inner alchemy, referring to the balance and refinement of vital energies).

Subsequently, he became the 10th patriarch of the Nanwu School (a major branch of Quanzhen Taoism, one of the two principal sects of Taoism in the Ming and Qing dynasties).
