Chen Zhixuan was a native of Zhongmou (present-day Zhongmou County, Henan Province) during the early Yuan Dynasty. He was also known by his literary name, Anyangzi.

He became a Taoist monk under the tutelage of Zhenren Chongdao (a title meaning "True Person," an honorific for accomplished Taoists).
After achieving proficiency in Taoist studies, he traveled south to Baimen Mountain. Delighted by the mountain's beautiful scenery with clear waters, he settled in Huangli Village.

The local villagers held him in high esteem and reverence, so they built a Taoist temple for him to reside in. He initiated over a hundred disciples into Taoism. Chen Zhixuan used the earnings he gained from practicing medicine (as was his usual practice) to repair and expand the temple buildings. Li Zhenchang, the abbot of Changchun Palace (a major Taoist monastery), granted the temple a plaque inscribed with "Lingyang Guan" (Lingyang Taoist Temple).

Chen Zhixuan spent his remaining years there and eventually passed away in the temple.
