The Cheng Tongsun 成童孙
Paul PengShare
Cheng Tongsun, styled Anren, was a native of Shanshan County in Yixing Commandery during the Southern Dynasties (now part of Yixing City, Jiangsu Province, China).
According to Daoxue Zhuan (Biographies of Daoist Scholars), he became a Daoist practitioner in his early childhood and maintained a long-term vegetarian diet (abstaining from meat and adhering to Daoist dietary precepts). He was characterized by his calm and astute nature, and he stood out from the crowd with his independent spirit.

He embodied noble Daoist virtues and mastered exquisite Daoist doctrines and practices.
People near and far all held him in high esteem and admiration.
In the 16th year of the Tianjian era of the Liang Dynasty (517 AD), he was appointed by imperial edict as the "Shangzuo" (Senior Preceptor) of Jingxin Guan (Jingxin Daoist Temple). He standardized Daoist rituals and norms in the region under his jurisdiction, and disciples and followers flocked to study under him.
