It was roughly completed in the second year of the Shaoding reign period of Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty (1229).
The original text consists of twelve volumes, while the version in the Daozang (Daoist Canon) is divided into eighteen volumes and included in the Yujue (Jade Commentary) category of the Dongshen Section.
The Collected Commentaries on Dao De Jing
This work collects commentaries on the Laozi from twenty scholars of the Song Dynasty, with Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty’s commentary placed at the forefront and titled "Zhenghe Imperial Commentary". The other nineteen scholars are Chen Jingyuan, Sima Guang, Su Zhe, Wang Anshi, Wang Pang, Lu Dian, Liu Gai, Liu Jing, Cao Daochong, Dazhenzi, Li Wen, Chen Xianggu, Ye Mengde, Liu Ji, Zhu Xi, Huang Maocai, Cheng Dachang, Lin Dong and Shao Ruoyu. Most of these twenty scholars’ commentaries have been widely lost over time, so the preserved content in this collection is indeed precious documentary material.
