Originally attributed to Gu Huan, a scholar of Wujun summoned by the imperial court, it is actually a compiled commentary from the Song Dynasty.
Consisting of eight volumes, it is included in the Yujue (Jade Commentary) category of the Dongshen Section of the Daozang (Daoist Canon).
Ruan Yuan of the Qing Dynasty once identified this work as Thirty Scholars' Collected Commentaries on the Daodejing by Zhang Junxiang, a Taoist priest of the Tang Dynasty. However, Daozang Summary edited by Ren Jiyu in modern times concludes that it was compiled by scholars of the Song Dynasty, as the work quotes Chen Xianggu’s Daode Zhenjing Jie (Commentary on the Classic of the Dao and Virtue) from the Song Dynasty. This book collects commentaries on the Laozi from fifteen scholars, among which many are lost works, making it of considerable documentary value.
