Roughly completed in the 6th year of the Chunyou reign period of Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty (1246), it consists of four volumes and is included in the Yujue (Jade Commentary) category of the Dongshen Section of the Daozang (Daoist Canon).

This work incorporates exegeses from various scholars and occasionally presents the author’s own insights. The scholars cited include Wang Bi, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, Emperor Huizong of Song, Chen Jingyuan, Sima Guang, Wang Anshi, Su Zhe, Zhu Xi, Ye Shi, Cheng Dachang and Liu Ji.
The author opposed interpreting the Laozi from the perspective of alchemy and immortality.
