Consisting of thirty-two volumes, it is included in the Yujue (Jade Commentary) category of the Dongshen Section of the Daozang (Daoist Canon).

This work is one of the author’s Colloquial Annotations on the Three Masters: Laozi, Zhuangzi and Liezi, featuring clear and accessible explanations. The author claimed that "I once dabbled in Buddhist scriptures", and thereafter "gained some insights into the Zhuangzi—insights that previous scholars had not fully explored". He wrote this book with the intention of "cleansing the Venerable Nanhua of the shoddiness of Guo Xiang’s annotations", yet in essence, his approach is close to interpreting the Zhuangzi from the perspective of Chan Buddhism (Zen) and aligns with the core connotation of neisheng waiwang (Inner Sageliness and Outer Kingship) in traditional Daoist philosophy.
