Cui Daoyan (1141–1221)

Cui Daoyan was a native of Tiao County in Guanzhou (now Jing County, Hebei Province) during the Jin Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Xuanfu, and his literary names were "Zhenjing" and "Qingxianzi" (Master Qingxian). After his parents passed away, he lived in a thatched hut beside their tomb for three years to observe the mourning ritual. Later, he became a Taoist monk and studied under Liu Changsheng from the East China Sea (a renowned Taoist master of the Quanzhen School).
Cui Daoyan was fond of reading books of the "Three Teachings" (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism) and had a profound understanding of their core doctrines. After receiving the true transmission of Taoism from Liu Changsheng, he returned to Weijia Villa in Jiangling County and became well-known to the world for his medical skills. Later, he resided at Haotian Guan (Haotian Taoist Temple) on Jinshan Mountain.

During the Zhenyou Rebellion (a period of chaos and warfare in the late Jin Dynasty), he fled south to avoid the conflict and took up residence at Chunyang Guan (Chunyang Taoist Temple) in Gong County. He passed away in the 5th year of the Xingding era (1221) at the age of 81.

During the reign of Emperor Dingzong of the Yuan Dynasty, he was specially conferred the honorary title "Taoist Priest Xuanfu, Master Zhenjing, in Charge of Taoist Scriptures and Seals". His famous disciples included Liu Zhiheng, Hao Zhijian, and Zhang Zhiwei.
