Dai Qingyuan (1662-1735) was a native of Renhe, Zhejiang Province in the early Qing Dynasty, with his ancestral home in Anhui Province. His courtesy name was Chuyang and his literary name was Tingyun.

According to Jinge Xindeng (The Lamp of the Heart at Jinge Mountain), he had a simple and straightforward temperament from a young age, and was upright and unyielding in his principles.

His clan uncle Lü Quanyang deeply appreciated him, and Dai Qingyuan studied the Taoist doctrine of "Qingxu" (Purity and Emptiness, a core concept of Taoism emphasizing detachment from worldly desires to align with the Dao) under Lü for many years.

In the 30th year of the Kangxi reign (1691), Dai Qingyuan traveled from Guanshan Mountain to Jinge Mountain to visit Tao Shi'an. Tao Shi'an then recommended him to convert to Taoism at Jingu Cave in Hangzhou, where he studied under Vinaya Master Zhou Mingyang.

Before long, he successively received the "Three Great Precepts" (core Taoist precepts) and made substantial contributions to expounding and promoting Taoist doctrines.

In the 50th year of the Kangxi reign (1711), Dai Qingyuan took charge of Helin Taoist Abbey and served as its principal lecturer. Over more than a decade, his words and deeds always adhered to the fundamental tenets of Taoism.

His reputation in the Taoist community grew increasingly prominent, and people near and far held him in high admiration.

Later, as the administrative affairs (of the abbey) became increasingly onerous, he handed over the management of the abbey to Luo Shengzhe and retired to a private chamber.

In the 9th year of the Yongzheng reign (1731), he transmitted Taoist Dharma to Vinaya Master Qingyun and conferred the "Great Precepts" upon him. In the 13th year of the Yongzheng reign (1735), Dai Qingyuan passed away at the age of 74.

He was a Vinaya Master of the 10th generation of the Longmen School (a major branch of Quanzhen Taoism).
