Originally titled Liezi, it is traditionally attributed to Lie Yukou, a scholar of the Warring States Period.

The Hanshu·Yiwenzhi (Book of Han·Treatise on Literature and Arts) recorded eight chapters of the Liezi, which were lost long ago.
