The Taoist Ritual of Filial Repayment and Delivering the Departed

Judging from its content and wording, it is believed to date from the Yuan Dynasty or the early Ming Dynasty.

Consisting of one scroll, it is included in the Dongxuan Section (Mysterious Grotto Section) of the Daozang under the category of Rituals and Ceremonies.

The rituals recorded in this text are used by ordained Taoist priests to deliver and transcend their deceased relatives, with a primary focus on reciting prayers and memorial texts.

It states that the Three Cardinal Guides and Five Constant Virtues are the fundamental principles of being a moral person. Therefore, the Jingming Method is rooted in the devotion of loyalty to the sovereign and filial piety to parents; the Alliance of Truth Retreat establishes its teachings based on repaying ancestors and delivering relatives.

All Taoist priests who study the path to immortality and cultivate true essence must prioritize filial repayment and delivering the departed. They pay homage to the Taoist true beings on behalf of their deceased ancestors, repent for transgressions, and pray to the sages and true beings to redeem the departed souls from the underworld and elevate them to the immortal realm.

The key procedures of this deliverance ritual include reciting prayers, paying homage and repenting to deities of all directions, making vows, offering sacrifices to express gratitude, submitting memorials, reading official documents, and sending off the gods while burning ritual offerings.
