Ding Shanyuan was a native of Yuanqu (now part of Shanxi Province) during the Jin Dynasty. His courtesy name was Zhanran, and his Taoist title was Tongyuanzi (Master of Penetrating the Origin).

As recorded in Shanxi Tongzhi (Comprehensive Gazetteer of Shanxi), Ding Shanyuan was intelligent and perceptive from a young age. At the age of 16, he followed his father’s order to become a Taoist monk at Hongqing Guan (Hongqing Taoist Temple). He was skilled in Taoist arts and practices.
The imperial court bestowed upon him a purple robe (a symbol of high honor for Taoist practitioners) and granted him the title "Tongyuan" (Penetrating the Origin).

During the Zhenyou era of Emperor Xuanzong of the Jin Dynasty (1213-1217), wars and chaos broke out in the Hedong region. Many government troops engaged in killing and plundering. Ding Shanyuan risked his life to remonstrate with the military authorities, and as a result, a great number of people were saved from death.

Zhai Xiongzheng wrote a stele inscription to give a detailed account of his deeds.
