The Wonderful Essential Scripture of the Eight Emperors of the Cave Gods

The original text does not credit an author.

It was probably compiled during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.

According to the record in The Ritual of the Three Emperors of the Supreme Lord Cave Gods, this scripture is one of the classics of the Cave God Section, and the original version consisted of three volumes.

The existing version in the Daozang (Taoist Canon) is a single volume, included in the "Original Texts of the Cave God Section".

The content of the scripture is diverse and complex, mostly focusing on the sorcery arts of communicating with gods, summoning spirits, swallowing talismans and reciting incantations practiced by alchemists in the Wei and Jin dynasties.

It begins with The Method of Fasting and Observing the Eight Precepts, which lists eight fasting rules for those who study the Dao.

Next is The Scripture of the Three Ones of the Three Emperors, which expounds the method of visualizing the Three Ones Divine Lords residing in the upper, middle and lower dantians within the human body.

Then comes The Nine Chapters of the Yang Song, a text about invoking celestial gods by chanting divine verses (in the form of five-character poems).

Following that is The Diagram of the Nine Emperors, which details the method of summoning the Nine Emperors’ spirits to invoke gods and expel evil, including the iconographic depictions of the Upper, Middle and Lower Three Emperors Divine Lords.

Subsequently is The Talismans for Summoning Immortals and Calling Forth Spirits, containing the Three Emperors Talismans for Summoning Immortals and Talismans for Ascending to Heaven. It claims that writing and swallowing these talismans in accordance with the proper rituals enables one to summon immortals, call forth spirits and ascend to the celestial realm.

Finally, there is The Essential Secrets of the Three Emperors’ Celestial Scripts in Large Characters from Xicheng, which extracts the Three Emperors’ Scripts (i.e., 92 talismans) passed down by Bo He and Bao Jing in the early Eastern Jin Dynasty, and elaborates on the essential techniques of using these talismans to summon gods, restrain souls, suppress ghosts and expel evil spirits.

At the end of the book, there is an appendix titled The Secret Sayings of Baopu, in which Ge Hong of the Eastern Jin Dynasty recounts his experience of summoning mountain gods using celestial script talismans to eliminate tiger infestations when he was herding cattle in his early years, and also narrates the origin and dissemination of the Three Emperors’ Celestial Scripts. This serves as an important source of information for studying the transmission process and content of the Three Emperors’ Scripts during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
