Dongguo Yan (? - 216), styled Gongyou, was a native of Shanyang in the Eastern Han Dynasty (now Xiuwu County, Henan Province; some say Jinxiang County, Shandong Province).
As recorded in Volume 34 of Li Shi Zhen Xian Ti Dao Tong Jian (Comprehensive Mirror of True Immortals Through the Ages Practicing Taoism): He once studied under Li Shaojun, serving him by holding combs and towels. After several years of unremitting service, he was taught the Five Emperors' Six Jia Left and Right Spiritual Flight Techniques and the Twelve Methods of Escaping into the Void and Summoning the True.
After practicing for several years, he could write at night with his body emitting light. He could also foresee life and death, and his predictions were often accurate. He passed away in the 21st year of Jian'an in the Eastern Han Dynasty (216).
