The True Grotto Supreme Returning to the Origin: Nine Paths Flight Feather Scripture (Dongzhen Taishang Huiyuan Jiudao Feixing Yu Jing) is one of the early classics of the Shangqing School, presumably dating back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317–420 CE).
Volume 5 of Zhengao (The True Declarations) states: "In the Dao of immortality, there are flying feathers for transcending the void and treading the sky"; Wushang Miyao (The Supreme Secret Essentials) quotes from either The True Grotto Returning to the Origin: Nine Paths Flight Feather Scripture or The True Grotto Supreme Flight Feather Scripture—both references refer to this text.
Daozang Quejing Mulu (Catalogue of Missing Texts in the Taoist Canon) records this text as a one-scroll work.
In the surviving version of the Daozang (Taoist Canon), the text is divided into two separate scriptures: one is The True Grotto Supreme Flight Feather Scripture: Nine Truths Ascending to Mystery – Upper Record (a single scroll), included in the Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) Section; the other is The Supreme Flight Nine Mornings Jade Scripture (a single scroll), included in the "Jade Essentials" category of the Dongxuan (Mysterious Grotto) Section.
According to the quotations in Wushang Miyao, these two parts originally belonged to the same classic, though they could also circulate as independent texts.
