Du Changchun was a native of Xiaoyi in Shanxi during the Jin Dynasty. In his childhood, he worked as a cowherd. One day, he encountered an extraordinary person in the fields, who taught him Taoist doctrines and enlightened him—thus he acquired Taoist magical arts.
When he grew up, his reputation spread far and wide. At the request of Taoist followers, he went to Fenzhou in the second year of the Huangtong era (1142) to take charge of Tianning Wanshou Guan (Tianning Longevity Taoist Temple).
In the third year of the Huangtong era (1143), he gave lectures to teach The Supreme Precious Jade Flower Grotto Chapter Scripture on Delivering the Departed, Saving the World, and Ascending to Immortality, expounding on the techniques of cultivating the true self to achieve longevity and prolonged life.
