Zhang Huiming was a native of Zhaojun County in the early Tang Dynasty (now part of Hebei Province). According to Volume 33 of Lishi Zhenxian Tidao Tongjian (General Mirror of the Dao: Records of Authentic Immortals Through the Ages), he received Taoist teachings at Yuanzhen Guan (a Taoist temple, "Guan" refers to Taoist monasteries) and lived in seclusion in the Zhongtiao Mountains. He often practiced incantation and restraint techniques to expel evil spirits and goblins.
In Chang'an (the capital of the Tang Dynasty, now Xi'an), he met Hunyuanzi, from whom he learned the "Dao of Gaoben" (a specialized Taoist practice focusing on spiritual ascension to higher realms).

After practicing this Dao, he made remarkable contributions to helping others, attained complete mastery of Taoist doctrines, and stood out for his outstanding Taoist scholarship among his peers.
Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty heard of his reputation, so he issued an imperial edict summoning Zhang to the imperial court. Zhang performed a "jiao" (a formal Taoist ritual involving prayers and offerings) that proved highly efficacious, and the emperor thus bestowed upon him the title "Great Master Miaoji" (with "Miaoji" meaning "Wondrous Salvation").
