The Ethical Mirror Compendium 水镜录

The compiler is unknown; the text was seemingly compiled in the Ming dynasties.

It is a single scroll, incorporated into the Continued Daozang of The Daozang.

This book compiles seven essays exhorting virtue, forbidding killing, and advocating the accumulation of merits and cultivation of virtues, namely: The Treatise of the Supreme Lord on Response and Retribution, The Emperor Zitong's Admonition to Scholars, Treatise on Merits in Secret Extending Longevity, An Essay on Freeing Living Beings, Seven Precepts Against Killing, and Ballad Exhorting Against Ox Slaughter. The essential tenet of each essay proclaims that heaven’s way blesses the virtuous and calamities the lewd, the gods reward good deeds and punish evil ones, and retributions for good and evil follow one’s acts as an echo answers a sound and a shadow follows a form. Therefore, people are exhorted to perform good deeds and accumulate virtues, and must not kill living beings or harm lives, embodying the core benevolent creed of compassion and non-harm in The Dao.
