Fan Boci was a native of Guiyang (now Chen County, Hunan Province) during the Song Dynasty.

As recorded in Volume 17 of Lishi Zhenxian Tidao Tongjian (Comprehensive Mirror of the True Immortals Through the Ages Who Embodied the Dao): He suffered from madness and evil afflictions, and conventional medical treatments proved ineffective. When he heard that Taoist Priest Shen Jing was highly skilled in Taoist medical practices, he became Shen Jing’s disciple. After several months, he was completely transformed, appearing as a different person.
Subsequently, he went into seclusion on Mount Tianmu and sustained himself by consuming sesame seeds (a food believed in Taoism to nourish vitality and aid cultivation).

He persisted in his practice without interruption for 17 years. His sincere devotion moved the "Dadong Zhenxian Siming Jun" (True Immortal Administrator of Destinies from the Great Grotto Realm) to descend to the mortal world. The immortal taught him 36 chapters of alchemical scriptures. Later, Fan Boci attained the Dao, ascended as an immortal, and was conferred the title "Xuan Yi Zhenren" (True Person of Mysterious Unity).
