The Fangzhong School
An important school of the pre-Qin Fangxian Dao. It originated from the witchcraft religion of female worship in the matriarchal clan communes of primitive society. The Fangzhong School of pre-Qin Fangxian Dao was prevalent in the Qin and Jin regions, revering figures such as Peng Zu, Rongcheng Gong, Xuannü (Dark Lady), and Sunü (Plain Lady).

The bamboo slips unearthed from Mawangdui in Changsha, such as Tianxia Zhidao Tan (Discourse on the Supreme Way Under Heaven), indicate that the Fangzhong School of Qin and Han Fangxian Dao not only pursued harmony in sexual life but also used sexual techniques to cure diseases, maintain health and youthful looks, and combined them with certain qi-circulating movements, reaching a relatively high level.
The Qin and Han Fangxian Dao revered Huangdi (the Yellow Emperor), integrating the three schools of Fu’er (elixir ingestion), Xingqi (qi circulation), and Fangzhong (sexual techniques). It was said that Huangdi refined elixirs at Dinghu, took immortal medicines, learned qi-circulating techniques from Guangchengzi, and studied sexual techniques with Xuannü and Sunü.

The Fangzhong School has been continuously passed down in Taoism. After the rise of Neo-Confucianism in the Song and Ming dynasties, Neo-Confucians condemned sexual techniques. Apart from becoming a secret technique in the imperial court, the Fangzhong School was absorbed by the Yin-Yang School of alchemy, which practiced dual cultivation of men and women.
