The Four Commentaries Edition 道德真经集注

It compiles the commentaries by four scholars: Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, Heshi Gong, Wang Bi and Wang Fang.

Consisting of ten volumes, it is included in the Yujue (Jade Commentary) category of the Dongshen Section of the Daozang (Daoist Canon). This work contains a postscript written by Liang Jiong in the 6th year of the Yuanfu reign period (1098), which holds that the commentaries by Heshi Gong, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang and Wang Bi probe into the fundamental essence of the great Dao, and that Wang Pang was profound in the study of Dao, De, nature and destiny, "illuminating the subtle and revealing the hidden, thus forming a unique school of thought". The postscript also mentions that Prefect Zhang "ordered scholars in the official school to collate these four commentaries without any additions or deletions, and engraved and published them to circulate in the current era and propagate its teachings", indicating that this collection was compiled in the Northern Song Dynasty.

The preservation of Wang Fang’s commentary in this book is quite precious.
