The Fu Zicheng 傅自成

Paul Peng

Fu Zicheng lived during the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties. He studied under Huang Yangsu, the abbot of Jingyun Guan (Jingyun Taoist Temple) in Chongren County (now part of Jiangxi Province), and became a Taoist priest.

After several years, he achieved mastery in Taoist practices. He then went to Longhu Mountain, where he studied under Fu Tongxu (a Taoist Immortal Official) and focused on the Zhengyi (Orthodox Oneness) Taoist tradition, with particular expertise in the Lingbao Leifa (Lingbao Thunder Magic).

In the early years of the Hongwu reign (1368), he was recruited to the imperial court as a musician and dancer.

According to Records of Yuqing Jingyun Guan (Volume 3 of Xianquan Ji by Zhang Yuchu), Fu Zicheng resigned and returned home due to old age in the 30th year of the Hongwu reign (1397), and later lived in seclusion at Jingyun Guan.
