The Gan Zhijian 甘志坚

Paul Peng

Gan Zhijian lived during the Zhizhi period of the Yuan Dynasty (1321-1323).

He was bestowed the honorific title "Great Master of Penetrating Mystery and Abundant Virtue" (Tongxuan Shengde Dashi) and granted a purple robe trimmed with gold (a garment known as "jinlan zi fu" in Chinese, a symbol of high religious status and imperial favor in ancient China).

He served as the abbot of Chongyang Yanshou Gong (Chongyang Longevity Palace) in Jingyang County, Jingzhao Fu (Jingzhao Prefecture, an important administrative and cultural center in the Yuan Dynasty). Additionally, he held the positions of "Sandong Jiangjing Fashi" (Dharma Master of Lecturing on the Scriptures of the Three Grottoes, a high-ranking Taoist academic role) and "Tidian Gongmen Shi" (administrative supervisor in charge of the palace’s daily affairs).
