The Music Chapter of Sorrow and Joy by the Supreme Jade Chen
The author of The Music Chapter of Sorrow and Joy by the Supreme Jade Chen is unknown.
It was probably written by Taoist priests of the Shangqing School during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, or the Sui and Tang dynasties.

It is a one-volume work and included in the Supplementary Taoist Canon (Xu Daozang). This text focuses on the ritual methods for reciting eulogies.
It contains five five-character eulogy poems, titled "The Wisdom Verse of Sorrow and Joy in Step-in-Vacuity" (Buxu Youle Huici). When Taoist priests perform sacrificial rituals (jiao) and practice "Step-in-Vacuity" (Buxu, a ritual movement involving chanting while walking), chanting these verses can invoke the protection of the Five Emperors, helping them achieve immortality and ascend to heaven.
The book The Supreme Shangqing Scripture of the Jade Chen Phoenix Platform: The Qu Su Supreme Scripture includes "The Qu Su Wisdom Verse of Sorrow and Joy by the Supreme Jade Chen".
The content and wording of this text are roughly the same as that verse, so it is presumably an adapted excerpt from that book made by later generations.
This text is also included in The Eulogies and Verses of the Various True Beings in Shangqing.
