Gao Yanggui was a native of Xiushui (now Jiaxing County, Zhejiang Province) during the Qianlong and Jiaqing reigns of the Qing Dynasty. His original given name was Gui, with the courtesy name Danlin and the art name Xiangyun. He was a zhusheng (a title for students in the imperial examination system) of Xiushui.

The Lamp of the Heart at Jinge Mountain states that he admired the academic thoughts of Chen Guiyun and often traveled to Jinge Mountain at that time.

In the 24th year of the Jiaqing reign (1819), he came to Jinge Mountain and took charge of the mountain’s affairs.

In the 25th year of the Jiaqing reign (1820), he returned to Xiushui and founded the Gao Clan Ancestral Hall.

He was loyal and trustworthy by nature, and regarded filial piety and fraternity as core values. Not long after, he passed away due to illness.
