Gong Kepei was a native of Jiading, Zhejiang during the Jiajing reign period of the Ming Dynasty, and he was originally from Kunshan.

He was well-versed in the names of Taoist deities. At that time, many senior court officials who composed "qingci" (Taoist prayers written on blue paper for imperial sacrifices) often consulted him about Taoist stories. Therefore, everyone liked him, and he was appointed as a "Taichang Boshi" (a scholar-official in the Taichang Temple, which was in charge of imperial rituals and sacrifices).

The emperor ordered him to enter the West Palace to teach palace maids to perform Taoist ritual ceremonies. Later, he was promoted repeatedly and finally became a "Taichang Shaoqing" (a junior minister in the Taichang Temple). However, he was hated by eunuchs, who falsely accused him. He was imprisoned and died in jail.
