Gou Dening was a native of Nanyu, Goujiazhuang, Laiyang (now part of Hebei Province) during the Yuan Dynasty.

In his early years, he studied under Sun Daoji, who held the title of "Master Baoyuan'ansu" and served as a Tidian (a supervisory official in Taoist institutions) at Longxing Guan (Longxing Taoist Temple) in Yizhou. He served as a disciple for many years and never showed the slightest slack in his duties.
In the 6th year of the Zhizheng era (1346), he received the imperial decree (issued in the name of a Zhenren, an accomplished Taoist master) from Changchun Palace. He was conferred the title of "Master Xuanyuan'ansu" and appointed as a Tiju (an administrative official) of Xuantan (a Taoist ritual altar, also referring to a Taoist administrative division).

In the 7th year of the Zhizheng era (1347), he took up the post of Tiju of the Taoist community in Yizhou.

In the 8th year of the Zhizheng era (1348), he was further granted the imperial decree (issued in the name of a Dazhenren (Grand True Person) who held the position of "Great Master of Spreading Dao in the Mysterious Gate of Immortals" and served as the leader of the Taoist order). He was ordered to take up the post of Tidian under his Taoist lineage and was bestowed with a purple robe trimmed with gold. (From Record of Merits and Deeds of Master Gou, Tidian of Longxing Guan)
