The Gui Yifang 桂义方

The Gui Yifang 桂义方

Paul Peng
Gui Yifang (? - 1341) was a native of Guixi in Xinzhou Prefecture during the Yuan Dynasty (now part of Jiangxi Province).

According to the Stele of Mr. Gui, when his mother was pregnant with him, she dreamed that Li Chunfeng (a famous astrologer and diviner of the Tang Dynasty) stayed overnight at their home; therefore, Gui Yifang also went by the alternative name Li Ji.

When he grew up, he studied Taoism under Revered Master Xiong at Shangqing Palace. In the first year of the Yuanzhen era (1295), he accompanied the Celestial Master Zhang of the Successor Han lineage to an audience with the emperor, and was appointed as a Taoist official in Qizhou. Later, he wandered through mountains and rivers, and many extraordinary stories were told about him. The Taoist priest Wu Licheng built Hunlún Hut and invited Yifang to reside there. In the first year of the Zhizheng era (1341), Gui Yifang passed away without illness.
