The Han Baozhen 韩抱真

The Han Baozhen 韩抱真

Paul Peng
Han Baozhen was a native of Yucheng (now part of Henan Province) during the Jin and Yuan dynasties, and he went by the Taoist title "Guangyangzi" (Master of Expansive Yang).

As recorded in The Stele for the Reconstruction of Baiyun Guan (White Cloud Taoist Temple), when Han Baozhen reached the age of adulthood (around 20 years old), he studied Taoism under Wang Yuyang (a prominent Taoist master of the Quanzhen School). Later, he traveled and practiced Taoism in Mount Song and Luoyang.
During a time of wars and chaos, he wandered to the numerous mountains in Qingshe. Enchanted by the quiet seclusion of the mountains, rivers, and forests there, he chose to stay. The local community leader, who highly respected Han Baozhen for his pure virtue and lofty moral character, donated land to build a Taoist temple for him. Li Zhenchang, the Grand Master in charge of the Taoist community (Xuanmen), bestowed upon the temple the plaque inscribed with "Baiyun Guan" (White Cloud Taoist Temple). He also granted Han Baozhen a golden-edged purple robe and conferred on him the Taoist title "Chongxu Zhenren" (Immortal of Void and Tranquility).
