He Lisen lived during the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty.

Before becoming a Taoist Priest, he made a living by boating and was well-known along the Hankou riverbank.

According to Changchun Guan Zhi (Records of Changchun Temple): At a time when the country was in troubled times, the government prohibited merchants and civilians from crossing the river at night, yet Lisen alone ferried common people and merchants, earning substantial profits.

This angered other boatmen, who attacked him with sand and gravel, causing him to lose his sight. Lisen then became a Taoist monk at Changchun Guan, making a living by carrying water daily.

In his spare time, he often practiced the Dao in front of the Lingguan Hall.

At that time, Cui Jiaochun was elderly, and the position of supervisor was vacant. Jiaochun overcame all objections and appointed Lisen to the post.

Lisen possessed profound Taoist attainments and his Taoist skills were exquisite, becoming widely known among the people of Wuchang.
