The He Luan 贺栾
Paul PengShare
He Luan was a native of Renping (now part of Shandong Province) during the Jin Dynasty.
According to Records of Dongchang Prefecture, he served in the Jin court as a Lang (a junior official) in the Ministry of Water Affairs and was granted the given name Yuan.

He was on friendly terms with Ge Hong and learned from Ge Hong the techniques of qi absorption, alchemy, and daoyin (a system of physical exercises similar to qigong).
Later, growing weary of the ups and downs in officialdom, he resigned from his post to study Taoism.
