Hou Shanyuan was a native of Lishan, Shaanxi Province, during the reign of Emperor Shizong of the Jin Dynasty.

He adopted the literary name "Taixuanzi" (Master Taixuan) and styled himself "Taixuanzi, the Dweller of the Divine Cave in the Gush She Mountain" (Gush She Mountain refers to a legendary mountain in ancient Chinese mythology, often associated with immortals).
His works that were circulated in the world include:

  • Commentary on the Supreme Pure Scripture of the Heavenly Youth Protecting Life (Taishang Taiqing Tiantong Huming Miaojing Zhu),
  • Commentary on the Scripture of Constant Purity and Tranquility Spoken by the Supreme Old Lord (Taishang Laojun Shuo Chang Qingjing Jing Zhu),
  • Commentary on the Yellow Emperor's Scripture of Hidden Symbols (Huangdi Yinfu Jing Zhu),
  • On the Admonitions and Precepts from the Supreme Pure Taixuan Mirror (Shangqing Taixuan Jianjie Lun),
  • Diagram of the Nine Yangs from the Supreme Pure Taixuan (Shangqing Taixuan Jiuyang Tu),
  • Collection of the Supreme Pure Taixuan (Shangqing Taixuan Ji).

Records of him can be found in the Taoist Canon (Daozang), a comprehensive collection of Taoist scriptures and works.
