Hu Dao'an was a native of Wujiang (now part of Jiangsu Province) in the early Ming Dynasty.

His courtesy name was Angu. He was a Taoist priest at Yuanmiao Temple. As recorded in the scrolls of Yuanmiao Temple Chronicle: Hu Dao'an once met a wise man, who taught him the Qingcheng Taiyi Thunder Scripture and the magic method for subduing and investigating ghosts and goblins.

In the late years of the Hongwu era (1398), a severe drought hit the Wujun region. Hu Dao'an ascended the altar to hold a prayer ceremony, and immediately thunderstorms broke out.

He usually pretended to be crazy, so people at that time called him "Madman Hu".
