The Hu Huncheng 胡混成

Paul Peng
Hu Huncheng was a figure in the early years of the Southern Song Dynasty.

To avoid the chaos of war, he crossed the Yangtze River southward and took up residence in Guangling (an ancient name for modern Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province). He styled himself "Xuanxue Jinshi" (a title he adopted to denote his expertise in Taoist metaphysics, combining "Xuanxue"—Taoist metaphysics—and "Jinshi"—a traditional imperial examination title, though not indicating he actually passed the Jinshi exam).
He practiced the art of internal alchemy (a Taoist practice focused on refining one's vital energy, essence, and spirit within the human body) and wrote The Orthodox Essentials of the Golden Elixir (Jindan Zhengzong).
